Preventive Controls for Animal Food (PCQI) Course

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) enables the FDA to focus on preventing food safety problems rather than reacting to problems after they occur.  The Preventive Controls for Animal Food regulation is intended to ensure safe manufacturing/processing, packing, and holding of food products for animal consumption in the United States.

The regulation requires that certain activities must be completed by a “Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI)”.  A PCQI is a qualified individual who has successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls at least equivalent to that received under a standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by FDA or is otherwise qualified through job experience to develop and apply a food safety system.

This 20-hour course, developed by FSPCA and taught by a Lead Instructor for the FSPCA Preventive Controls for Animal Food Course, is the “standardized curriculum” recognized by FDA; successfully completing this course is one way to meet the requirements for a “preventive controls qualified individual.”

Participants will learn how to develop, implement, and manage a Food Safety Plan in accordance with FSMA regulations. A certificate of completion will be awarded by the FSPCA upon successful course completion.  Participants must attend the entire course and participate in activities for successful completion of the course.
